Cornelius Vander Wal, 85, died Saturday, April 18 at the Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in Corsica. Funeral service will be Tuesday, April 21 at 10:30 am at the First Reformed Church in Harrison with burial following in the Harrison City Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, April 20 from 5 - 8 pm with a 7:00 pm prayer service at the Koehn Bros. Funeral Chapel in Corsica.

Cornelius Vander Wal was born February 21, 1924 to Marinus and Gertrude (Beukelman) Vander Wal in Douglas County, SD. He attended country school through the eighth grade and then began working his own farm near Corsica. He was united in marriage to Lena Kuyper on February 12, 1946 at her parent's home. They farmed southwest of Corsica until retiring and moving into Harrison, SD in 1991. In 2008, they became residents of the Pleasant View Good Samaritan Center in Corsica where Cornelius died on Saturday, April 18, 2009 at the age of 85.

He is survived by his wife, Lena of Corsica; 3 sons: Verlin Vander Wal and wife, Helen of Corsica; Calvin Vander Wal of Burbank, SD; and Claire Vander Wal of Corsica; four grandchildren: Todd Vander Wal and wife, Michelle of Pipestone, MN; Gretchen Schlosser and husband, Brent of Willmar, MN; Grant Vander Wal and wife, Shannun of Corsica; and Beth Eisenbraun and husband, Travis of Mitchell, SD; five great-grandsons: Tylan, Jamison, Slayton and Braxton Vander Wal and August Schlosser; and sisters and brothers-in-law: Harriet Kuyper of Mitchell; Evelyn Scholten of Brookings, SD; Stan Hoekman of Corsica; and Ivan and Jean Kuyper of Corsica.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 3 brothers-in-law and 2 sisters-in-law.
