Dennis Markus, 85, died at the Good Samaritan Society in Corsica on September 22, 2012. Funeral service will be Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at 10:00 AM at First Reformed Church in Harrison, SD with burial following in Harrison City Cemetery in Harrison. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 25, 2012 from 5 - 7 PM at Koehn Bros. Funeral Chapel in Corsica with a prayer service at 7:00 PM.

Dennis L. Markus was born on May 24, 1927 in Harrison, SD to Jacob L. and Jennie (Doorn) Markus. He attended country school in Harrison. He entered the U.S. Navy in 1945 during WWII and was honorably discharged in 1948. Dennis married Doris Noteboom in Harrison on December 25, 1951. They farmed near Harrison for three years after which he worked as a mechanic in Huron and Lake Andes. They bought Doris' parents farm in 1957 and farmed until retiring in 1993. They then moved to Corsica where Dennis began his hobby of restoring tractors. He was a member of First Reformed Church in Harrison where he served as Deacon and Elder.  Dennis was a member of the Gideon International, and he served many years on the Corsica School Board and in the American Legion.  Dennis enjoyed hunting, golfing, and was a master fixer. He was a faithful husband and loving father. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and sharing his expertise with them. Dennis died on Saturday, September 22, 2012 in Corsica following a brief battle with cancer at the age of 85.

He is survived by his wife, Doris of Corsica, four children, David (Deb) Markus of Rock Rapids, IA, Debbie (Roger) De Young of Houston, TX, Denise Nelsen of Rock Valley, IA, and Darla (Barry) Olson of Chancellor, SD, two sisters, Nona Markus and Marlene (Dean) Plooster both of Harrison, SD, sister-in-law, Dorothy Markus of Chamberlain, SD, and eleven grandchildren.
Dennis was preceded in death by his parents; son, Darin; son-in-law, Brian Nelsen and brother, Milford. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Gideons International.
